It wouldn’t be a proper Dr. Seuss celebration if we didn’t make green, slimy oobleck from the book, Bartholomew and the Oobleck.
This is actually an incredibly easy “recipe,” and it provides a lot of entertainment.
“What is it?!?! Do we eat it?”
“Do we touch it?!”
When I was teaching middle school students, my sixth graders made oobleck as a part of their “solids and liquids” science unit. It’s a really unique substance because it’s solid and hard when you try to scrape it with a spoon, but then it quickly turns to liquid slime when you lift it and touch it.
Gibbs was slightly amused/disgusted by our oobleck, so he participated briefly and then moved on to the safety of his Matchbox cars. Casey, on the other hand, could not get enough! He was mesmerized…
You will notice that I only added a few drops of green food coloring to my oobleck, since I wasn’t keen on the idea of my kids having green hands for the rest of the week. That said, you can make this as bright and vibrant as you like…just add more food dye until the color pleases you!
Oobleck!
Ingredients
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup - 1/3 cup water
- A few drops of green food coloring
Instructions
- Place cornstarch in a large bowl. Slowly add 1/2 cup of water, while stirring, until reach desired consistency. You may need to add a bit more water if the mixture is still dry. Once your slime comes together, add a few drops of green food coloring.
The kids I nanny would LOVE this!
Hi! Yes, they definitely would. I can’t wait to do it again when the weather is a bit warmer and they can make a huge mess with it outside!
