Pulled, chopped, or shredded cooked chicken is an easy shortcut for quick dinners. From soups and salads to casseroles and pasta, this convenient collection includes 50 shredded chicken meals for busy weeknights!

Shredded chicken is a convenient shortcut for quick-prep meals, since it’s already cooked and ready to throw into a variety of recipes. You can purchase a store-bought rotisserie chicken, which typically yields about 3 cups of shredded meat, or cook your own chicken to shred at home.

How to Make Shredded Chicken

If a recipe calls for shredded chicken, you have a few different options:

  • Purchase a store-bought rotisserie chicken. Each chicken yields about 3 cups of shredded meat. Larger chickens may give you up to 4 cups, but 3 cups is a safe bet. Rotisserie chicken is seasoned, which just adds even more flavor to your finished dish.
  • Take advantage of leftover chicken from a previous meal.
  • Use store-bought pre-cooked chicken, such as a package of shredded chicken or Perdue Short Cuts. For many recipes (like casseroles), canned chicken will even work!
  • Boil your own chicken at home. To do so, boil about 1 lb. of boneless, skinless chicken breasts or boneless, skinless chicken thighs for every 2 cups of shredded meat called for in the recipe. Boil until cooked through (about 15-20 minutes). When cool enough to handle, chop or pull the chicken.
  • Use the slow cooker to make your own shredded chicken. To do so, you’ll need about 1 lb. of boneless, skinless chicken breasts or boneless, skinless chicken thighs for every 2 cups of shredded meat called for in the recipe. Place the chicken in a Crock Pot, season with salt, pepper, and desired herbs or spices, add a splash of chicken broth or water (you don’t need much — about ¼ cup), and cover with a lid. Cook on HIGH for 1-2 hours, or on LOW for 3-4 hours, just until the chicken is cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F. Use two forks to shred the meat, or place the meat in the bowl of a stand mixer and use the paddle attachment to quickly shred the chicken.

Preparation and Storage

Wrapped tightly or packaged in an airtight container, shredded chicken will keep in the fridge for 3-4 days.

You can also freeze the leftovers! Store leftover shredded chicken in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. Prepare a large batch at once, pack it smaller 2-cup portions, and stash it away for easy dinners! This is a perfect solution for meal prep.

Shredded Chicken Meals

Now, let’s get to the shredded chicken recipes! Once you have the cooked meat stocked in your fridge or freezer, the options are endless. From stuffing it in chicken tacos, to topping it on salads and chicken nachos, throwing it into soup and white chicken chili, or using it in cozy casseroles, shredded chicken is a year-round kitchen staple for easy dinners!
